If you’ve been looking for an excuse to dig out some of your costume jewellery or some throwback pieces from the ‘90s now is your chance. Bold and colourful jewellery is right on trend this summer, so it’s the perfect time to rummage in your jewellery box or to splash out on a couple of new items ahead of the warmer weather.
According to livemint, the jewellery we reach for is set to change. “After many seasons of wearing delicate designs in stacks and layers, jewellery lovers are now turning to bold maximalism and jewellery that makes a statement,” the website asserted.
The good news is that this encompasses a range of styles, so you’re bound to find something that suits.
One of the big influences for jewellery - and other clothing and fashion - this summer is the beach. You can expect to see lots of bright colours, designs inspired by coral reefs and fish, seashells and pearls in the mix.
Pearls are actually a trend in their own right, the website notes, pointing to designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Givenchy who both used pearl-laden accessories to add the finishing touches to the collections that graced the runways of their Spring/Summer 2019 shows.
Crystal jewellery is also making a comeback. This too was once a staple of jewellery boxes in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, and now it’s becoming a firm favourite once again. “Dripping crystal jewellery” was the phrase used to describe what Yves Sant Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello used to complete the look on his models this spring.
Invest in some crystal necklaces in the UK for your summer wardrobe, and don’t forget about the matching crystal earrings too. You don’t have to stick to white crystals either, with the website noting that colourful crystals are all the rage.
Chunky gold chains with big links are another trend to watch out for this summer. These pieces can also include embellishments in the form of pearls, jewels or charms, depending on what you’re after.
Another ‘90s throwback that’s returning to favour on the jewellery front is anklets. There was a time when a girl wouldn’t leave the house without a dainty chain around one or both ankles, and now those days are returning.
The Kit recently pointed out that there are some anklets that are so dainty they’re barely there, while others are sleek, modern and definitely fall into the bold jewellery trend. This is another place where you might see seashells, making anklets the perfect addition to your beachwear.
And there’s one more trend you should keep an eye on, according to Vogue: friendship bracelets. Variations on these fun and often colourful pieces of jewellery are popping up everywhere, featuring everything from seashells to colourful beads.
“It seems that practically every jewellery designer has debuted his or her own twist on the childhood favourite, with playful throwback necklaces, anklets and bracelets,” the fashion publication stated.
So, if you’ve long since lost track of all your jewellery from your youth, don’t worry as it seems there will be plenty of options to buy new pieces that fit in with the summer’s hottest trends.
